After an successful year one, Destiny is back with a vengeance with for year two with the release of Update 2.00, and more importantly The Taken King downloadable content. Taking place after the events of The Dark Below and House of Wolves, The Taken King brings us back to the return of the Crota storyline, where his father; the titular villain seeks revenge on the Guardians for killing the former.
Destiny: The Taken King is an 2015 story content expansion, it is developed by Bungie, and published by Activision. It is available on Playstation 3, Playstation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
While no sequel has been released just yet, Bungie has kept Destiny going with new expansions every few months to keep players interested in the title. New loot, enemies, and hours of content make The Taken King and the 2.00 update worth every minute invested into it. With a recommended starting level of 25, the new found difficulty provides genuine challenges and rewarding weapons and armor drops.
THE GOOD: The Taken King and update 2.00 provides players with new story content, and additional story for the previous out of box content, which I felt was an issue with the game at launch. The raised difficulty for the Taken King content felt much appreciated, as there’s a certain point in character growth with the previous expansions and the main game that lacks challenge once your character rises to certain levels. The new loot also felt extremely helpful with the improved difficulty for the Taken King enemies.
THE BAD: The grind of soloing missions is still a bit of a pain, and you’ll often find yourself skipping weaker enemies to go straight to finishing the current mission as fast as you can.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: Destiny: The Taken King is an excellent improvement on what was already shaping up to be an even more excellent game. The new loot and gear felt extremely rewarding and the increased difficulty for enemies made the story content feel challenging again. New cutscnes being added to previous content was also a welcomed surprise. With the likely sequel looming closer and closer, Year Two is shaping up to be a hell of a ride for Destiny players.
