Concursion is hard to describe in terms of genre. Mainly due to the fact that it makes homage to multiple genres and different games, and it does so in excellent light.

Concursion is a 2014 action-adventure platforming game. It is developed and published by Puuba Games, and is currently available on PC.

I’ve been gaming since I was about 6 years old, and out of all of the games I’ve played Concursion has to be one of the strangest & I mean that in a good way. Concursion is essentially an adventure shooter with a bit of platforming and arcade in the mix. However, in reality Concursion acts as if it’s multiple games in one package. There’s so much homage that you may not even be able to spot every piece on your first play through, and you will be wanting to play it again, as their are three different characters to choose from.

THE GOOD: Where to begin? Well, if you’re a classic gaming buff, then Concursion just might be one of your favorite games from the modern era. There’s such an incredible amount of homage from Super Mario to Asteroid, there’s going to be something for every one in this game. The different styles of gameplay used in Concursion provides players with a unique experience like no other.

The genre mashing used in Concursion is amazingly well done. Nothing ever felt like it was over done or was too much in too little time. The story follows the adventures of a young hero who is on a quest to request the Princess from the antagonist (sound familiar?). You also have the option of playing as three different characters, the aforementioned hero, her loyal Knight, and even the antagonist. All of which have different stories. The music in Concursion is a clear cut indicator of it’s inspirations as the opening theme sounds like it was a straight up fan remix of one of the themes from SNES Mario games.

THE BAD: There were some tech issues that would break the game here and there, but nothing really serious. Some might not understand or get Concursion upon their initial look of the game.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: Concursion is a fantastic game that does a lot with a little, but in a way that’s perfectly balanced. The use of multiple genres and homage to classic games will put a smile on classic gaming buffs’ faces. The music and gameplay were well crafted to fit that of a classic 80’s-90’s title, and the option of choosing three characters with different stories provided some excellent replay value. There were tech issues that would break the game here and there, and some players won’t get Concursion due to it’s use of multiple genres. However, for fans of gaming of all kind and those who still like to take a go at some classic gaming here and there, Concursion is the perfect title for you.
