Overall score 80

Cloverpit takes the wrong type of dopamine from slots and the right kind of dopamine (within reason) that kids get from loud noises doing something successful in a video game. You play as one of Hell’s latest residents and are forced to gain the highest scores possible within a set amount of turns while playing slots to pay off your debt and maybe escape.

Cloverpit

Cloverpit is a 2025 rogue-lite, psychological horror game. It is developed by Panick Arcade and published by Future Friends Games. It is available on PC, mobile, and Xbox Series X|S.

Editor’s Note: While there is a story and lore of sorts for Cloverpit, it’s not enough for readers of this review to feel spoiled. A review code of Cloverpit was provided by Future Friends Games in support of this review.

Let’s go gamble while in Hell.

THE GOOD: In Cloverpit you’re a slot machine gambling addict forced to spend yours days in hell trying to pay off a debt that may or may not exist. Towards the end of the round the debt increases with each successful pay off, you only have so many attempts to successfully pay off the debt. If you fail you’re doomed to eternity in Hell and restarting from the beginning of the game. As you play you’ll get better and better with luck combinations through items which can be acquired via tickets won at the end the of each round. These Lucky Charms when used strategically can increase the pay out of every slot round, increase the number of slots increase the pay out for each slot, as well as increase your odds of hitting a jack pot amongst other potential power-ups.

The game features over 150 items to gain luck of all kinds from the lucky charms. The greater the combination of power-ups the greater and quicker your pay out and ticket gains are. Most lucky charms are temporary usually lasting no  more than a few rounds, but the opportunity for permanent buffs will occur per the end of the round at the cost of in-game currency or the sacrifice of your current tickets.

Unique power ups and abilities are purchased to increase your luck and slot count per round.

There isn’t too much of a story for the game present, but it’s an ongoing roll to get as much of the debt paid off as possible before death. In regards to the slot machine itself, you have certain icons which grant a certain pay out such as triple sevens giving seven coins, and multiple combinations granting multiple payout quantities. You can have a board full of different combinations or the same icon for the biggest payouts available. Outside of paying attention to the items you have available which you can reroll in addition to the permanent buffs there’s not much strategy, most of the game is genuinely dumb luck.

There’s a scoreboard to compete against other players.THE BAD: Rounds and failure can be unforgivably quick if you don’t have the right lucky charms. It takes the gambling aspect to heart because one bad combo of lucky charms is pretty much game over in the first round and there’s not much you can really do to stop it.

Cloverpit is a solid game with a good amount of replay value, especially for slot heads.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: Cloverpit is a fun game to kill some downtime with if you have a few hours to yourself or are on a trip. There’s a mobile version that was recently released for people who want an ease of access curious enough to dip their toes in. The gameplay is admittedly addictive for how simple it is and you can lose yourself in it if you play long enough.
