Since it’s inception Castlevania has had been apart of every gaming generation and on nearly every and all platforms of choice. With a 30+ year history and multiple releases there’s almost a Castlevania for everyone and the Castlevania Anniversary Collection is looking to bring most of it’s classic library to the current generation.
THE GOOD: Featuring a total of eight games spread across multiple platforms any fan of Castlevania who started twenty or so years ago will be satisfied with what Konami has provided for them. Even the more obscure Kid Dracula is apart of this great collection of titles. While the collection doesn’t have any remasters present the release versions of these titles is more than enough to quench the thirst for fans of the long dormant IP. There’s also a digital booklet which provides historical facts and information based on the franchise. It’s a bit of a shame this collection wasn’t released physically as that book would have been a neat collectible to pack in.
THE BAD: The ports do contain some defects. For example there’s an issue with the display for certain titles in the collection, most notably when docked on the Nintendo Switch edition & some display issues also occur on the Playstation 4 version. And the lack of multiple save states per title is an unnecessary annoyance.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: Castlevania Anniversary Collection packs in a generational collection to the modern age in solid fashion. While it lacks the current gen bells and whistles, it’s old school Castlevania at its finest. A few minor tweaks through patches and this is a collection that’s quickly hard to pass.
