CastleStorm: Trailer

I loved the look of this game, Looking at the screenshots when they started to flow out I was hooked instantly. The awesome cartoon-ish graphics, the ridiculous looking characters. Can you blame me for being excited? So when I received copy of this game, I was ecstatic. It is a tower defense game at it’s core, with RTS, and even a bit of 2d side-scrolling action aspects for when you jump in as your hero to mop up some annoying vikings. The game has a few modes, First off is the single player Campaign. It’s basically mission after mission of different maps, With some great gameplay thrown in. The campaign’s story consists of two factions going head to head. The Norse and the King’s Guard.

The story is all about defending and going on the offense against your invaders, each mission you collect gold to ultimately upgrade your castle, and units as well as the hero himself. Most missions you will be trying to capture the flag with your unit’s or an alternate win is to destroy the enemies castle completely. You do this simply by using your ballista from an assortment of funny weapons ranging from your typical harpoon which allows you to impale enemies as they come at you, up to a sheep battering ram who conveniently upon hitting the shoot button farts and boosts into the castle destroying a good portion of the it.

CastleStorm has MANY units you can bring into the field to help you defend your castle, varying from archers, priest, paladins, To mounted knights, all with their own use, and strategic value, as you have only a limited amount of slots for them.

There is also some strategy in the ways you build your castle, You have rooms that provide bonuses, whether it be money, or powering up your units, that needs to be protected, you can do so in a unique little castle editor mode, giving you a whole new look on defending that ever under attack castle.

The other game mode was survival mode and hero survival. I played these modes with a colleague of mine and we were thrown right into the action, he upon the ballista and myself as the defending Norsemen. Wave after wave of enemies came attempting to overwhelm us only to come back full force in the next wave. It was fun, and the multilayer worked really well for my tastes.

Overall the story was enjoyable, plenty of references from Game of Thrones, as well as Skyrim. Though they weren’t overdone thankfully,I personally am tired of hearing the arrow to the knee joke.

This was a great game, addictive and it hit’s hard on all fronts. Whether you are a casual Angry Birds player, or a somewhat serious strategy buff, this game pulls it off rather well. Fun party game to play with your friend as well as enjoy some single-player action that doesn’t let up.
