With a new development team and an prequel/origin story behind it, does Batman: Arkham Origins continue Rockstead’s fantastic work in good graces? Find out in our review below.
Batman: Arkham Origins is a 2013 action-beat ’em up game developed by Warner Bros. Montreal and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. It is available on Playstation 3, Xbox 360, PC, Wii U, PS Vita, and Nintendo 3DS.
Slade’s body is ready.
THE GOOD: Batman: Arkham Origins stars a younger, greener Bruce Wayne who shows little mercy to his enemies compared to his older counterpart. It’s essentially the same old Arkham gameplay of the past entries. Full of a great cast of villains Arkham Origins’ story is a fun one to play through, and Troy Baker was a fantastic replacement for Joker, most of the time you could barely tell there was someone else giving their voice to the character.
I am Batman!
The assassins were a nice addition and the unique boss fights were also pretty fun to do. The new open world map was also pretty fun to traverse as you go from mission to mission. I also enjoyed the ability to travel to and from the Batcave, it made the game feel like an actual Batman adventure. Playing as Slade/Deathstroke was also pretty amazing. Unfortunately we weren’t able to get into any multiplayer sessions, but judging from what we’ve seen of the feature it looks to be a very fun addition, if you can find players that is.
Did ya miss me?
THE BAD: If you’ve played the previous two entries then this game won’t provide much of a challenge for you and it feels more or less like the same game Arkham City was, which is both good and bad. The lack of innovation is seriously noticeable here. Some boss fights were ridiculously easy while simple moments such as getting inside Gotham PD were ridiculously difficult.
The Dark Knight cometh.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: Although fun Batman: Arkham Origins lacks much of a challenge for seasoned players and if you have played one of the past entries it feels too, “been there, done that”. The new map size was fun to explore on missions and Troy Baker as The Joker was an amazing delight. Some boss fights were easy, while simple moments such as reaching your destination had idiotic levels of difficulty at times.
