The Finale to Rocksteady’s critically acclaimed Batman: Arkham franchise has come to an official close with the release of Batman: Arkham Knight. In the latest entry Batman takes on a gang of his rogue gallery led by Scarecrow, as well as the militia led by the Arkham exclusive enemy; the mysterious Arkham Knight.
Batman: Arkham Knight is an 2015 action game developed by Rocksteady and published by WB Interactive Entertainment. The game is the finale to the Arkham franchise, and is available on PC, Playstation 4, and Xbox One.
It’s the end of Rocksteady’s amazing Batman journey, adapting a number of great Batman storylines, which was said to be impossible for an Batman game adaptation, Rocksteady did so with flying colors. Batman faces the most ruthless criminals of Gotham City, led by Scarecrow as well as the Arkham Knight and his militia.
THE GOOD: While it can be argued that Arkham Knight’s story is a little off, especially due to the reveal of the Arkham Knight, at the same time the number of references to The Killing Joke and A Death in the Family made for some great scenes, and it was only fitting for Arkham Knight to receive it’s M rating because of this. The improved combat brought some fun ways to increase the hit meter, and experienced Arkham players didn’t have any issues getting the hang of the reworked combat system. I also enjoyed how almost every gadget felt useful, this was shown in Arkham City as well, but more so in Arkham Knight. While I’ll be doing a separate Arkham Episodes review, I just wanted to say that playing as Harley Quinn, is my favorite video game moment of the year right now. And the truly open-world filling that Gotham City gave was a sight to behold.
THE BAD: If there’s one thing I and a lot of gamers don’t like, it’s having something forced down my throat, and the Batmobile did just that. The levels of force on the Batmobile, made the game feel like a chore sometimes, and it took some getting used to, to control, maneuver, and use the thing when you actually had to. And another thing I didn’t enjoy was the Arkham Knight’s identity (SPOILERS AHEAD), as the story progressed, the Arkham Knight’s identity became more and more obvious. I would have been fine with Jason Todd being the Arkham Knight, if there wasn’t already the involvement of the Red Hood in the game. That basically added insult to injury.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: Batman: Arkham Knight is the grand finale we wanted it to be, however issues were clearly present. Some were in the gameplay, while others were in the story. The super forced use of the Batmobile perhaps being the biggest complaint of the game, while a lot of people personally disliked the identity of the Arkham Knight for good reasons. Despite these flaws, Arkham Knight is going to be one of the best gaming experiences you can have this year.
