The newest of two installments in the Assassin’s Creed franchise is Unity which is next-gen exclusive, Revamped free run mechanics, and new combat makes great use of the Playstation 4 & Xbox One’s power. However, there are some issues with Unity, that many will feel is an large annoyance.
Assassin’s Creed: Unity is an 2014 action-adventure, platforming game, it is developed and published by Ubisoft. It is available on PC and next gen consoles.
When word got out that Ubisoft would be splitting the Assassin’s Creed franchise into two different stories for both current and last gen consoles gamers and longtime fans were cautious of the move. This of course, also brought some fears amongst gamers that one title would be lessened in quality in comparison to the other. However, for it’s first entry into next-gen Unity does a fairly good job of getting around to the new technology.
THE GOOD: Assassin’s Creed: Unity’s new parkour mechanic is quite awe-inspiring, and the minute you’re thrown into gameplay after playing as kid Arno, it becomes instantly noticeable. New abilities such as running slides, and being able climb virtually any rof for added free running speed makes traveling the large map a breeze.
The new combat was admittedly rough to get used too, especially having just come from last year’s Black Flag, but it was luckily none too difficult. New abilities such as the phantom blade & berserk blade made stealthing your way through an enormous group of enemies fun. Speaking of which, it’s still an absolute blast to stealth kill enemies from behind.
THE BAD: Some of the main missions can be quite repetitive such as simple search, find, and kill missions. The side quests would often spark more creativity in comparison. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to do co-op due to the servers being down pre-release. Game breaking glitches were also present, but occurred in lowered numbers.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: Unity has brought a breathe of fresh air into the Assassin’s Creed franchise. New parkour and combat mechanics brings players a fun experience, however repetitive main missions can often get in the way of the fun. And the combat will take some getting used to, rather the player is seasoned or not.
