Assassin’s Creed has finally crossed over to pirate territory, is this new adventure in the long running franchise worth diving in to? Find out in our review below:
Assassin’s Creed Black Flag is a 2013 action-adventure game. It is developed and published by Ubisoft. It is available on Playstation 3, Playstation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii U, and PC.
I’ll be honest, I was never a major fan of the Assassin’s Creed franchise despite playing just about every game that has been released on consoles to date. Something about the series just didn’t click with me, I never had a problem with the franchise because of gameplay or tech issues, I just wasn’t a fan. That however all changed hours after my play time with Assassin’s Creed Black Flag. There’s so much addiction with this game that it’s hard to put down at times, which is somewhat annoying, but well worth forcing through the pain for the enjoyment.
Thar she blows mateys!
THE GOOD: From the sailing of the 7 seas to causing chaos on land , Assassin’s Creed Black Flag is a fantastic installment and perhaps the greatest in the long running franchise from Ubisoft. Who allow me to say has been really on the ball with some their more recent titles as of late, but enough digressing from the game review at hand. Black Flag protagonist Edward Kenway, is an intriguing character, especially compared to last installment’s Connor. He wants the best in life and is tired of living like a rat. You can actually feel Kenway’s emotion, thanks in part to voice actor Matt Ryan.
Edward and crew ready to do some damage.
One of the key elements in Black Flag is the ability to assemble a crew and sail the seas with your ship the Jackdaw. Naval battles are an amazingly fun experience, and as you make your way across the waves you even come across some rather surprising sights, such as a small island with treasure or a whale, which you can actually gain the ability to hunt at some point of the game. As you progress the law will have even more powerful and deadly ships for you to face as the story of Edward Kenway advances.
Land ho!
The vast amount of detail put in to Black Flag is nothing but aspiring. Such large scales of land and sea, the vivid realism of Black Flag makes it so that the predecessors before it could only dream of being compared to it’s sizable map. There’s plenty to do if you don’t want to continue with the main campaign and just feel like screwing around, such as multiplayer and what not. Side Quest are pretty fun time killers as well, and the amount of continue to upgrade Edward and the Jackdaw is pretty large, though some content only buying unlockable when you progress further in story became annoying admittedly.
Come at me bro.
THE BAD: The modern day missions weren’t exciting, like at all compared to Assassin Creed III’s. It was actually pretty annoying to progress between whatever it was you had to do in a modern mission and then back to the Animus. Some of the controls for the modern day missions were a little annoying to get the hang of as well.
The Jackdaw in all of it’s beautiful glory.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: Assassin’s Creed Black Flag is a fun, joyful, and beautiful entry into the Assassin’s Creed franchise. The naval battles are so fun that it almost angers you that Ubisoft were unable to bring it to online play. The incredible scale and map size is so large that it brings a lot of continue for you to do. With plenty of islands to search for treasure or just screw around with, and there’s even whale hunting. The modern day missions were a bit of a pain to go through, as was going back and fourth between the modern day missions and the Animus. Another annoyance is having to wait until you progressed through the story in order to pick up better weaponry and content throughout the main campaign.
