Two fan-favorite light novel franchises collide in Accel World vs Sword Art Online. In a rather odd, but not very crossover Kirito & co meet Kuroyukihime in a surprisingly well meshed Japanese action RPG. It should be noted that most of the SAO portions of the game take place within the series’ ALFheim game world.

Sword Art Online and Accel World, both light novels with similar plots are brought together in a fairly well done crossover title, at least done far better than you’d expect it to be. With a competent story that’s fun for fans and non-fans of both or either IP, this is an experiment that could become a classic clash of franchises with a second, or possibly even third attempt.
THE GOOD: As previously mentioned even if you aren’t a fan of Sword Art Online, Accel World, or either franchises you should still enjoy the story. It’s brilliantly written, and compliments the crossover well. The combat system and core world aspects may seem familiar to those who played Sword Art Online: Lost Song, so it may be easier for some compared to others, but even newcomers will be ok down the line. Most of your experience will be soloing, but there are moments when you can have a party travel with you. Boss fights can be crazy fun when you least expect it.
THE BAD: The weaker points holding Accel World Vs Sword Art Online back are somewhat minor, but they have a big effect on the game’s overall experience. Firstly, it’s incredibly easy to get lost within the game’s world map, and not in a good way. Second, environments tend to get a little dull from time to time, and lastly, if this sort of thing bothers you, the graphics can feel a bit dated for a 2017 release, but it should be noted that these types of games aren’t trying to look like the prettiest thing out there most of the time. Some SAO fans may be annoyed by the ALFheim setting.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: Accel World vs Sword Art Online is a fine crossover that will please droves of fans, newcomers, and non-fans alike. A well written story, great combat system, and fun boss fights outweigh the small, yet effective issues such as bland environments and easy to get lost world map, but for what;s worth this crossover has both series complimenting each other quite well.
