This mission eventually leads her to finding former inspector turned rogue, Shinya Kogami. Since departing the sqaud, Kogami has kept himself busy, including becoming a possible terrorist. Psycho Pass: The Movie is an 2015 shounen anime film, it is the film sequel to the anime series Psycho Pass. It is produced by Production IG, and licensed by Funimation. It is currently in theaters in English dub.
While the exact timeline of Psycho Pass: The Movie isn’t quite clear, what is clear is the fact that the film is canon, and takes place, at least some time after season one. Following the events of Akane’s leadership over Unit One, and Kogami’s departure from Japan, the movie follows Akane as she looks into illegal aliens who attacked her and her squad in Japan, this ends up leading to intel on Kogami’s whereabouts as well as an eventual reunion between the two in a warring country, that just installed the Sybill System.
THE GOOD: Psycho Pass: The Movie being canon to season one of the anime was a fantastic way to write the movie compared to the usual film filler treatment anime films receive, one has to appreciate a true movie sequel for an anime series when it occurs, given how rare it is. Kogami becoming a central character and the return of the Akane/Kogami dynamic felt like a special reunion for fans of the series. The animation is still top notch, and shows how grand of a studio Production IG has become the last several years. The signature OST of Psycho Pass is featuring in the film, and it’s still golden.
THE BAD: While the central focus of the film was definitely on Akane and Kogami, some villains felt like an after thought around the film’s closing, this was rather odd considering they were big players at the start of the film.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: Psycho Pass: The Movie is an excellent movie sequel to the first season of the anime. Viewers knowing the fate of Kogami felt special as he makes a true departure from Unit One come the films end. The reunited Akane & Kogami also provided some good fan service, while also showing that Akane can still hold her own as the lead character in the series. Some villains felt like an after thought during the climaxing moments of the movie however. Otaku Dome gives Psycho Pass: The Movie an 85 out of 100.
