The critically acclaimed Psycho Pass’s first season is out now on DVD and Blu-Ray. Originally released in 2014, Psycho Pass is one of those rare occasions where an anime only series is actually very well written, directed, and animated. The war between main protagonist Shinya Kogami and Shougo Makishima is one of the greatest rivalries in shounen anime history.

Psycho Pass season 1 is one of Production I.G. greatest projects, the studio is best known for straight forward anime developments rather than adaptions of manga series. Psycho Pass’s cyberpunk world and uber violence, as well as it’s main antagonist for season one has made Psycho Pass one of the greatest anime series to have not been adapted from previous source material.

THE GOOD: Directed and written by the trio of Naoyoshi Shiotani, Katsuyuki Motohiro, and Gen Urobuchi, Psycho Pass’s first season has become a seinen fan favorite due it’s well written story, super violence, character development, and overall direction. Most of the praise has to go towards the battle between Kogami and Makishima, the latter of which who seems the uncanny ability to trick the Sybil System into thinking he’s incapable of committing a crime, despite the opposite happening multiple times. The two were so desperate to kill one another that it drove Kogami to the point of using a lethal handgun in order to exterminate Makishima rather than a Dominator, which is the preferred weapon of choice for Inspectors under Sybil.

THE BAD: Due to the limited number of episodes, it feels like the end of the story was a tad rushed if only slightly.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: Psycho Pass makes a lot of impressive feats having not been adapted from any prior source material. An excellent character driven story, a feeling of importance given to several characters in its world, solid action, and a lot more should put Psycho Pass very close to the top of the list of anime viewers’ “must watch”. Otaku Dome gives Psycho Pass: The Complete First Season Blu-Ray an 87 out of 100.
