In just a few days/weeks DC Comics & WB Pictures will launch the beta of their long-awaited stream service DC Universe, an in-house streaming app for web, mobile, and tablet made for DC newcomers & hardcores. The service will feature a mix of original and classic DC TV shows, films, and comics including but not limited to: Teen Titans, Batman: TAS (in HD for the first time), The Dark Knight, Batman ’66, Superman I-IV, New 52, and more. While DC hasn’t unveiled anything specifically being available for the beta we can take a couple of educated guesses at what likely will and likely won’t be present on the beta version of the service:
What We’re Probably Getting For Content:
If we were to split the possibilities of content made available for the beta version of DC Universe into three parts then I’d imagine it’d be something like this: For comics you’re likely looking at a few Golden Age comics, a lot of New 52, and a very, very, very little amount of DC Rebirth content, why so little for Rebirth? Well for one thing it’s still ongoing and even at only about two or so years into the product line I doubt DC would want to give out too much of their current continuity for free. So what you’ll probably get on that end is the #1 issues of the respective Rebirth brands, and maybe a brand or two with up to #2-#5ish. I’d imagine Batman, Superman, and Justice League would fit the latter. For TV and film it’s a little bit harder to put my finger on honestly. I can see it being difficult to choose which direction they want to go for live-action vs animated for the beta. For example, I’d be surprised to not see them showing off Batman: The Animated Series’ HD remaster on it, but something more recent like Batman Ninja probably won’t be there. On the live-action front at least one of the Superman films and Batman ’66 are a likely given.
What We’re Likely Not Getting For Content:
Don’t expect the full season of Titans to be shown off for the beta, it’d make leaks way too easy before it’s proper premiere, which I’m sure DC wants to avoid. Even with that being said, maybe at least the pilot episode being made public is a possibility. Developers might have used this beta version as a canary release, which might have already caused the application to be hyped up. Most of it has already been leaked publicly from a description perspective and the episode has already completed its production so why not? For comics as previously stated, you’re probably getting Golden Age & New 52 with a handful of Rebirth, so don’t expect any newer issues like Batman 50# and such on there. For more classic TV shows & films I don’t see these being completely filled either. I’d expect to see a heavy focus on early 2000s animated series being available for the beta like Teen Titans given the recent news about it being revived, but nothing later. Also don’t expect something like The Dark Knight on there at beta. Just a hunch of mine, but I’d be surprised if anything from Nolan’s Batman or the DCEU is there at best we could get Batman Begins & Man of Steel.
What We’re Likely Getting For App Functionality:
The basics for the app are most definitely going to be available for the beta, The comics, TV, and film sections are expected to be live. MYDC where user favorites and such are located will work I’m sure. Being able to drop back in from where you last watched or read may be active, I don’t know why it wouldn’t other than it not being ready by the current beta version.
What We’re Likely Not Getting For App Functionality:
Don’t expect the forum and shop to be up quite yet. I see a small chance of the shop having some kind of preview access for exclusive items to those who were lucky enough to gain access to the beta and the forum being ‘read only’ access, but other than that not a chance. This would be a good way to show off the app’s offline viewing function, which we still don’t know if it’s limited to comics or not. However, I can see DC holding off on this for a bit longer wanting to make sure it’s 100% ready for the full launch.
This is of course speculative on my part and DC could very well make everything planned for the full launch live this month, but do keep in mind that what we’re getting is a beta so limitations are to be expected. I do think it’s entirely possible for DC to continuously roll out new features & possibly even content as the beta continues however.
