The latest adventures in the XY series of Pokemon has Ash, Pikachu, and friends traversing the Kalos region. Featuring the sixth generation of Pokemon, Ash and friends discover new challenges, enemies, and the newly revealed X, Y, and Megaevolution forms for the very first time.
Pokemon is an 1997 shounen anime series, it is produced by OLM Inc, and licensed by Viz Media. It is currently available on DVD in English.
After over twenty years, five generations, of Pokemon, and dozens of characters, it’s once again time for another series in the long-running Pokemon franchise. Once again starring Pokemon trainer Ash Ketchum and his starter Pokemon; electric mouse, Pikachu, Ash faces the Kalos league and the new sixth generation of Pokemon. This time around Pokemon have new forms known as X & Y, and can now megaevolve (no this isn’t Digimon).
THE GOOD: While taking some getting used to Pokemon’s new animation style for the XY series is pretty beautiful for the long-running anime series. It’s still hard to imagine, but we’re damn close to reaching Pokemon’s 1,000th episode since it began airing in 1996. The action has gotten more shounen like in style this time around, while Pokemon has always been a shounen anime, there was always more of a comedic focus on the action than any series change, this has vastly changed in XY compared to any series in Pokemon’s history, and honestly it’s much appreciated seeing Pokemon grow up into a series shounen series, while still being enjoyable for all ages.
THE BAD: Nothing in particular stands out as “bad” for this new series.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: Pokemon has certainly grown up from the anime series it once was. With a more standard Shounen feel and direction, the long-running anime series has renewed life. A complete overhaul in not only direction, but how Pokemon works as well makes XY perhaps the best season in the anime series’ entirety. Otaku Dome gives Pokemon Kalos Quest Set 1 an 86 out of 100.
