The Playstation 4 has finally been released but does the 8th generation console really outshine it’s predecessors? Find out in our review below:
The Playstation 4 is finally upon us.
THE GOOD: The system itself is light weight and easy to carry, unlike the original model of the Playstation 3. I was able to connect to the internet with no problems at all and I enjoyed the fact that the console can recognize me via Facebook enough to pull up a profile picture over my PSN ID. Navigation for the new XMB is seamless, but I still had a bit of trouble figuring things out like notifications and what not.
The new XMB, aka the Dynamic Menu.
Everything in the Dynamic Menu comes together so well that you can do almost anything at launch. Want to pause a game to stream a movie on Netflix or Hulu? Do it! Want to pause that movie to buy a game on the Playstation Store? Do it! Fantastic features such as these gives the Playstation 4’s doubters a run for their money as far as launch concerns go.
Meet the DualShock 4.
The new DualShock 4 controller felt firm in my hands compared to the DualShock 3. I liked the built in speaker, it was surprising to hear the female announcer through the controller while playing Resogun (review incoming). Though the controller was admittedly a bit confusing and took a minute to get used to, especially with the start button also being the options button which was usually what select was for, but that has been replaced by the share button.

THE BAD: Upon first booting up the PS4 I was lost a for a minute, which makes me feel a little sorry for new gamers who purchase the console. Unless you’ve had experience with the Playstation 3 the menu will get difficult for you to figure out but only for a few minutes at most. The game selection isn’t much as far as exclusives goes, but Resogun is a definite first game to have rather you buy it or download it for free via PS Plus. I also hate that the start button acts as both the aforementioned button and the select button, it felt really awkward and one of the main things that takes a bit of getting used to. The share button could have also been bigger and place in a better area than what it was. I also hate that you can’t pause downloads during multiple downloads.
Greatness has arrived.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: The Playstation 4 is a fantastic console out of box, but still has some issues that need to be worked out. The ability to multitask is seamless and experienced some experienced Playstation users may or may not need some time to get used to the new Dynamic Menu, new players will definitely have a little trouble. While the sharing feature is cool the share button is a bit awkward to look for on the controller, i also didn’t enjoy the start/select button combination, and no pausing during multiple downloads was annoying, and although the current library is laxed the social options should be enough to tide players over as they wait for more games. Otaku Dome gives the Playstation 4 a 90 out of 100.
