In what should go without saying there seems to be a debate within the Dragon Ball community on whether or not the upcoming Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot DLC is a canon story. The short answer is no, in fact developers at CyberConnect 2 were quick to point out the fact that this was an original story for the game. The DLC in question continues the events of the base game covering the Battle of Gods film and anime arc, but there’s a twist. The person who performs the Super Saiyan God ritual in the game is Vegeta instead of Goku. Many point out Toriyama’s involvement with the story as “proof” of it being canon, but that’s wrong. Toriyama has a history of being involved with original storylines for Dragon Ball tie-in media including past games and those story remained as “what-if” scenarios for the Dragon Ball mythos. The canonical version of Battle of Gods states that Goku is the one who performed the ritual with the aide of Vegeta, Gohan, Goten, present Trunks, and Videl (using Pan whom she was pregnant with at the time’s Saiyan genes). In the game Vegeta performs the ritual with the aide of Goku, Gohan, Goten, present Trunks, and Future Trunks. Also Toriyama and co-author/artist Toyotaro mention in both the film “Resurrection F” and it’s anime counterpart (as well as the ‘Super’ manga) that Vegeta obtained the power of God ki and Super Saiyan God without the ritual on his own through his training with Whis. It’s kind of incredible that people still confuse the main story with what’s clearly filler or a fun “maybe” scenario. Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is available now for PC, Playstation 4, and Xbox One. The DLC “New Power Awakens” Part 1 is available via season pass and the Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot Ultimate Edition.
