Nintendo announced today that for September 2013, the Nintendo 3DS was once again the best-selling game system in the U.S. This makes it five months in a row for the Nintendo handheld and it is highly likely that trend will continue in October, thanks to the release of Pokemon X and Pokemon Y this past weekend, which has been making headlines for having already sold more than 4 million units worldwide . More specific numbers for the U.S. can be found in next month’s NPD report.
The 3DS wasn’t the only Nintendo system to see strong sales, as the Wii U gained new momentum thanks to a price cut, which occurred on September 20. On the same day was also the release of the Wind Waker HD bundle, that came with a specially designed Wii U gamepad and digital codes for Wind Waker HD and Hyrule Historia. Sales of the Wii U in September increased by more than 200 percent over sales in August.
These strong sales have the potential to continue for both systems, as we move closer to the holidays. With the 3DS getting games like The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between worlds and Mario Party: Island Tour, in which both release on November 22. For Wii U, a variety games can be looked forward to. With Wii Party U coming soon on October 25 and Wii Fit U becoming available on November 1 on the Nintendo eShop. Then there’s Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games (November 15) and Super Mario 3D World (November 22).
It’s a safe bet to assume that the Nintendo 3DS will see continued sales going forward into the holiday season. On the other hand, it’s still up in the air for the Wii U if things are completely turned around. If last month’s sales are any indication, the price cut and the release of Wind Waker HD certainly helped. So we’ll have to wait and see if the upcoming Wii U lineup will be enough to help the Wii U drive strong sales in a very crowded holiday season.
