Since it’s launch back in 2016 the My Hero Academia franchise’s anime adaptation has skyrocketed the series’ popularity nearly overnight. With manga & merchandise sales topping charts,as well as three seasons produced and a fourth on the way, My Hero takes to the silver screen with an all new film focused on All Might’s younger days as a hero.

THE GOOD: My Hero Academia takes us out of high school and onto an island. Focusing slightly on All Might’s younger hero days, he and Deku go to an overseas island where tech development for heroes plays a major role. Upon meeting All Might’s friend David Shield’s daughter Melissa, he receives a gauntlet which helps restrain the tear on his body from One For All’s usage. After reuniting with several of his friends from UA including Bakugo, Ida, Uraraka, Todoroki, and others villains attack the Hero Expo. It’s eventually learned that Melissa’s father David and his assistant staged the entire villain attack with David’s assistant taking things further. The villain Wolfram who led the attack betrays David and his assistant playing to take hold of their tech which amplifies hero and villain powers. All For One is revealed to have passed on part of his abilities to Wolfram and already exhausted All Might is overpowered. After Deku joins the fight he uses his gauntlet one last time alongside All Might’s full power and defeats Wolfram.

While a nice break from the source, My Hero Academia: Two Heroes doesn’t do too much to stand out from either adaptations.

For what it is My Hero Academia: Two Heroes is a fine hour and a half+ film. The voice performances and action scenes are just as good here as they are in the anime & manga. The development of Melissa, David, and new villain Wolfram is decent enough for a one off adventure.

THE BAD: While it does touch on All Might’s history a bit My Hero Academia: Two Heroes doesn’t really do too much else to move the story. With that being said, however if you’re already a fan of the anime and manga, you’ll be happy to know that the film incorporates all of the elements which make both versions of the series so special.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: My Hero Academia: Two Heroes is a more than fine first film for a continuously growing shounen franchise. Though it’s not too separative from the source which precedes it, it holds all the right pieces of what made it special in place. Otaku Dome gives My Hero Academia: Two Heroes an 80 out of 100.
