The excellently produced My Hero Academia pilot season adapts the manga about a super-powerless boy getting the biggest endorsement he could have ever gotten; from the story’s number one hero All Might. Main character Izuku “Deku” Midoriya breaks the mold of most shounen leads with his “rise from the bottom” character direction as All Might entrusts the future of his quirk “All For One” to him leading to Deku to his future as his mentor’s eventual successor.
My Hero Academia is an 2016 shounen anime series, it is produced by Studio Bones and licensed by Funimation. It is currently available on DVD & Blu-Ray in English.
My Hero Academia is a well done superhero series, if you could compared it to anything I’d say the closest would be to that of DC’s Young Justice, whereas that show focused on the sidekicks of seasoned superheroes, My Hero Academia focuses on complete rookie heroes with nearly zero prior mentoring looking to become the next generation of top ranked heroes.
THE GOOD: My Hero Academia season one is a pleasantly crafted manga adaption done right. With the quality animation of Bones and superb writing, My Hero Academia is not only a fantastic anime series, but could be used as a great tool to introduce new viewers into the shounen genre. The series has been described as the new generation “Naruto”, which is actually a fairly close comparison.
THE BAD: If there’s one negative about My Hero Academia’s first season, its the fact that the thirteen episode count has you begging for more. Thankfully season two (twenty-six episodes) is currently airing.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: My Hero Academia is off to a brilliant start. The comedy, action sequences, score, and writing is great, and Izuku is one of the most likable & relatable leads you’ll ever see. Otaku Dome gives My Hero Academia Season One Blu-Ray a 95 out of 100.
