After an incredible second season My Hero Academia is back covering the school trip arc. While things seem normal (as far as normal for UA students go) Midoriya and his friends soon find themselves in the middle of a life or death battle during a training camp.
My Hero Academia is a 2016 shounen anime series, it is produced by Studio Bones and licensed by Funimation. Season three is currently streaming in Japanese and English on Funimation Now & Crunchyroll.
After capping the season off with a fun filler episode, My Hero Academia’s third season quickly gets down to the canon. The students of U.A. are off to continue their training off school grounds and out in the wilderness. With the aide of some wacky new teachers, the U.A. students continue to hone their skills without realizing the danger of the League of Villains lurking around the corner in the dark.
THE GOOD: I know a lot of people were pretty upset with season three starting with a filler episode, but I can’t remember the last time filler entertained me so much outside of the Re:Creators recap episode. The competition between the boys during the swimming was full of both great action sequences and comedy & the teases of the key rivals of Class A was fun considering the circumstances. Episodes two and three quickly get things moving along with the manga with the introduction of the Wild, Wild, Pussycats. The new cast of characters who act as instructors for the U.A. students.
These characters are obviously for comic relief and it works, my particular favorite is the Pussycat with the age complex. Alongside Eraser Head they work the UA students from Class A & Class B to near death in order for them to surpass their limitations and increase the usage of their quirks. Meanwhile, Midoriya goes through his own little arc with the young boy Kota who has a disdain for heroes due to his parents deaths while employed as heroes. Several side characters such as Momo characters get some solid screen time which is always great.
THE BAD: Although it’s only three episodes in so far, season three is as of now sort of lacking on action in favor of story development. That’s not necessarily a bad thing in of itself, but this is a shounen series. However with the end of episode three it’s quite clear that action is about to pick up real hard.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: My Hero Academia season three was off to a great start with the first episode and while it hasn’t been bad episodes two and three were kind of laxed on action. However, if episode 4 is any indication this won’t be much of a problem anymore. The comedy is hilarious as usual and side characters are getting a good amount of development. Otaku Dome gives My Hero Academia Season 3’s first three episodes a combined score of 85 out of 100.
