Sony has released the first official trailer for it’s upcoming Spider-Man spin-off film Morbius and there’s a few connections and shout outs being made within the 2+ minute video. Initially the trailer shows background story on the titular character, then it proceeds to show the Sam Raimi Spider-Man on a poster with the word “murderer” painted in white across it. This is of course a reference to the ending of Spider-Man: Far From Home. Where Jake Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio filmed his death and made a fake confession where he accused Peter Parker of the death and revealed his secret of being Spider-Man. This follows an appearance from Michael Keaton’s Vulture which is likely to plant the seeds for Sony’s near two decade planned Sinister Six film. The former may have been an editing mistake and the scene was meant to connect Morbius with the MCU, or it could be that Morbius takes place within a separate universe where events similar to the MCU have taken place in their own form. It should be noted that Sony has plans to use Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse as a means of opening up & exploring multiple connecting universes within the Sony Marvel Universe, while at the same time Marvel is using Doctor Strange 2 for the same purposes. So it’s entirely possible that both the MCU and SMU connect to Morbius in some more canonical way, especially with Keaton reprising his role. You can see the trailer for the film below, Morbius opens in theaters on July 31, 2020 and stars Jared Leto as the titular character.
