Leader of the new “monster girls” anime/manga sub-genre Monster Munsume is out now on Blu-Ray & DVD courtesy of Sentai Filmworks. In Monster Musume mythical creatures had been kept secret from the general public by the Japanese government, three years prior to the start of the series the government decided to unveil the creatures to the country and released a bill allowing them to co-exist with humans. Main character Kimihito Kurusu involuntarily becomes apart of the “Interspecies Cultural Exchange Act” an initiative which allows the creatures to live with human families in a sort of foreign exchange student act.
Editor’s Note: A Blu-Ray review copy of Monster Musume was provided by Sentai Filmworks.
Half-Ecchi, half-something else, Monster Munsume is a revolutionary series that has sparked the new trend of “monster girls” a mix of humanoid and animalistic women. Since the manga’s initial launch in 2012 the new genre has spread like wildfire and it has since caused the launch of a slew of new titles under it such as A Centaur’s Life.
THE GOOD: This is definitely not for those into light hentai or ecchi anime as there’s plenty of it here. But the good thing is that the level of ecchi this anime has leveled at can actually be a pretty good laugh. The plot of different species trying to co-exist can tug at the heart strings on occasion so there’s at least some emotion underneath the silliness of it all. People will probably get more enjoyment from Monster Musume’s oddball sense of humor above all else however. Those wanting something a little more risque may be better off finding a monster girl themed hentai, or perhaps the likes of a london escort who doesn’t mind a bit of monster roleplay.
THE BAD: As stated before there’s a ton of ecchi content so if you’re not into that or chicks being mixed in with monsters and animals, then this probably won’t be for you.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: Rather you end up a fan of Monster Musume or not it’s already cemented it’s place in anime/manga history as the trend setter of a now bombing sub-genre. While still a little obscure to mainstream anime audiences, the genre will more than likely reaching a high peaking point over the years and you’ll have Monster Musume to thank for this for better or worse. Otaku Dome gives Monster Musume Complete Blu-Ray Collection an 75 out of 100.
