FXX’s romantic comedy starring Undeclared’s Jay Baruchel & The Eric Andre Show’s titular Eric Andre has come to short close with season one wrapping up this week. Having already been renewed for season two and getting favorable reviews from both critics and viewers, there’s a reason why this outlandish comedy with a simplistic plot is sticking around for an extended period of time.
Man Seeking Woman is a 2015 romantic comedy series based on the book The Last Girlfriend on Earth by Simon Rich. It stars Jay Baruchel, Eric Andre, Britt Lower, and Maya Erskine as the central cast. Season one premiered on January 14, 2015, and ran through March 18, 2015 on FXX.
When word got out that Jay Baruchel (whom I’ve been a fan of since Undeclared) was getting the lead role in his owb TV series on FXX, the first since the aforementioned Undeclared, you can imagine my excitement from those small amounts of details alone, However, as news began pouring through such as the series being a romantic comedy and Eric Andre being the co-lead, my excitement quickly turned to respectable caution, but this was proven to be all for not, as not only do Baruchel & Andre have an amazing amount of chemistry together, but the show’s simple plot of a dude down on his luck in the dating scene but trying to get back out with supporting friends and family is complimented with outlandish comedic plots per episode and it works.
THE GOOD: When one first hears of the Baruchel/Andre led Man Seeking Woman, you don’t think much of it. This was mainly due to FXX barely giving information on the plot. All we were basically told was that it was some kind of adaptation of the Simon Rich book The Last Girlfriend on Earth, and it was about a guy who wasn’t doing so great in the dating scene having recently broken up with his long term girlfriend. In all honesty, this was a fairly brilliant move, and in this case “less is more” worked.
Baruchel & Andre’s amazing chemistry is perhaps the most surprising element of Man Seeking Woman. Eric Andre having recently come from his own lead role in The Eric Andre Show, never really did much for me in the former, but in Man Seeking Woman, he’s had some genuinely funny scenes. The story is about Josh Greenberg (Baruchel’s character) moving on from his long term girlfriend and getting back into the dating scene, which he does throughout the season, however he still is very much in love with his ex. From dating a literal troll to going to a wedding in Hell, Man Seeking Woman had Josh go through one hell of an adventure. The plots never really strung together, but then they never really had to. All we needed was Josh not being able to move on from Maggie as far as continuity goes.
THE BAD: If you’re not much of a fan of Jay Baruchel or Eric Andre, then you may not enjoy the comedy present in Man Seeking Woman, because their styles work well for their characters.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: While Man Seeking Woman won’t be for those who aren’t particularly fond of Jay Baruchel and/or Eric Andre, it generally can be viewed as a comedy that’s for everyone. Andre & Baruchel work surprisingly well together, and the simplistic plot piled on with some very out there comedic moments brings genuine laughs. Otaku Dome gives Man Seeking Woman season one an 84 out of 100.
