Season two of the Maken-Ki anime follows up on the first season which adapts the first four volumes of the manga series. The only problem with season two is it basically completely ignores the canon, and acts as an entire season of OVAs with self-contained arcs, while those who haven’t read the manga may not be completely bothered by this direction, fans of the series who have will be pretty annoyed.
Maken-Ki Two is the 2014 second season of Maken-Ki Battle Venus, it is produced by Xebec, whom replaced the original studio AIC of the first season. It is licensed by Funimation, and currently available on DVD and Blu-Ray in English.
Maken-Ki Two is basically an entire anime-exclusive second season. This time around Studio Xebec took over for AIC, and it’s a tad puzzling as to why they decided to make this season full of self-contained singular arcs. Perhaps it was a decision of the studio heads? Or maybe they’re biding time for season three to cover the canon? Either way fans probably won’t be all that happy upon completion of the season.
THE GOOD: For what good there is to be had, Maken-Ki Two gives fans something to watch in order to tide them over for a potential third season.
THE BAD: The actual plot of the manga is almost completely ignored beyond the mentions of the Maken weapons, and everything in the season is totally random.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: While Maken-Ki Two is OK for what it is, the new direction is a little mind boggling, the non-canon, OVA like stories are just there, so in reality this should be known as Maken-Ki 1.5. Otaku Dome gives Maken-Ki Two an 69 out of 100.
