In a bit of surprising news, there will indeed be a reboot of 1988 horror classic Child’s Play. The problem? Don Mancini and the Universal team won’t be apart of it. Originally announced around the production time of Curse of Chucky, Don Mancini had announced intentions to reboot Child’s Play with a true horror vibe. However, MGM has announced that they’ll be handling the reboot with production beginning sometime this Fall for a likely 2019 release. This news comes just a month and a half or so after the announcement of “Child’s Play: The Series” which is being developed by franchise creator Mancini, producer David Kirschner, and their team. The series began entering development just a couple of weeks ago. Mancini has confirmed that the series is continuing, as well as the current “Universal Pictures universe” which has several films in development. In even more surprising news, the MGM Child’s Play universal won’t have Brad Dourif present, Dourif is best known for voicing the pseudo-titular character since the original film, and will lend his voice to the character in the TV adaptation as well.

Ironically, 2015’s Curse of Chucky was the start of a soft reboot of sorts for the franchise and story with Chucky being once again remade into a brand new Good Guy doll, albeit with a more modern look for the in universe toy. Chucky would also dig into his past to tackle an old enemy and inserting himself into her family. Mancini spoke to Bloody Disgusting on the reboot and if he and the rest of the team for the canonical franchise would give their blessing and long story short, no:

““We’re still working on the series and also plan to continue the film franchise with Universal,” Mancini tells us. “We intend to stay true to the universe we’ve created.””

Bloody Disgusting also released the current storyline for the reboot:

MGM’s new incarnation, which would be directed by Polaroid director Lars Klevberg, allegedly will continue to use the name Chucky, only the A.I. in a doll goes horribly wrong.

With Brad Dourif absent from the project it looks like MGM is opting to skip killer possession in favor of a more digital age take on the killer doll.
