After the cancellation of Key & Peele, with the duo announcing inspirations to do solo projects, the world was fearing another Chappelle’s Show situation, where we were with left with a years long void of quality sketch comedy TV. Thankfully. Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key confirmed thet the two would still work together on certain projects in light of their proposed solo runs. The first of these projects ended up being a fun film about a cat who can’t seem to stay in one place.
Keanu is an 2016 comedy film, it is produced by New Line Cinema and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. It is currently available on Digital HD and soon DVD and Blu-Ray.
As a big fan of Key and Peele it’s pretty great seeing the duo branch out into the big screen. While admittedly some sketches in Key & Peele are hit and miss (and I expect the same for their movie run), you’re always guaranteed at least a few laughs when these two work together. That has never been more true with the Key and Peele film debut release of Keanu.
THE GOOD: The star of the film is undoubtedly titular character Keanu. Despite him being a cat, his mannerisms, and behavior throughout the film were pretty hilarious. How Key and Peele got in talks with Keanu to actually voice the cat is still some amazing stuff. Key & Peele bring the laughs with their signature “thug” impressions.
THE BAD: The story is a tad predictable, and while funny, I kind of feel like Key and Peele’s all wasn’t put into their performances.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: If Keanu is how Key and Peele begin their debut on the big screen, then we’re in for a few more good years with the two. While Key and Peele had some laughs, they could have been a bit funnier given their history. Lovable cat Keanu steals the show however, as the true lead of the film. Otaku Dome gives Keanu an 79 out of 100.
