Otaku Dome recently interviewed director Todd Tucker over his independent horror film The Terror of Hallow’s Eve:
1: Can you go into details about the “true events” The Terror of Hallow’s Eve is based on?
The first 30 minutes of the film are based on events that happened to me when I was 14 years old. I was a weird kid making monsters in his garage that the neighbors didn’t want the kids playing with. Always getting in trouble for pulling bloody pranks. I was bullied and beaten up buy 3 kids much older than me. I decided to use that as the premise for my story. Everything after the first 30 minutes of the film is not true, it is pure dark fantasy/horror.
2: The story is based in the 1980s, was their any challenges you faced recreating that time frame for the film’s world?
The toughest part about re-creating a period piece is always wardrobe hair and props. Finding older cars to put in the background was a challenge. The old phones, pictures, furniture and clothes were all found at our local Goodwill.
It was then up to make up and hair to give our actors their final 80s look.
3: How do you choose the casting for the film, was it an instantaneously feeling in picking the right actors and actresses?
Finding the right actors for this film was crucial to me. Because they were playing real people from my past, I wanted to find actors that looked and acted like the real characters that they were playing. This was especially true with the actor that was playing Timmy, the young version of myself. Caleb Thomas truly carried the film and did an amazing job.
4: Can you kind of explain the Trickster, what he is and who he is as a character?
The Trickster, played by Doug Jones, is the true spirit of Halloween. He picks a vulnerable victim every Hallows Eve and tricks them into trusting him, then grants there wish of revenge by scaring their enemies to death. But be warned, the Trickster is two-faced and revenge comes with a price.
5: Without getting into too many spoilers, can you explain the closing moments of the film?
Throughout the film, you may question whether the horrific events and creatures you are watching are actually happening, or are they all in Timmy’s mind? In the last 5 seconds of the film we answer that question.
6: Is there room for a potential sequel?
We are actually set the premise for the sequel at the end of the film and takes place in present day. The Terror Of Hallows Eve continues.
