So the last handful of years I’ve been a bit of a Guardians of the Galaxy fan. This is obviously thanks in part to the recent films based within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, even with the beginnings of my fandom for the team I’ve often gone a bit out of my way to learn and absorb as much as I possibly can with the series. After and prior to watching the first Guardians movie I went into a bit if a deep dive on the franchise’s history picking up some comic lore along the way. This love for the series was furthered by Telltale Games’ Guardians of the Galaxy game. I think that version of the team was more in tone with their comic source. Now we have a second video game adaptation of the Guardians by Square Enix and Eidos. Set for release on PC and console this October Square’s Guardians appears to be a mix of comic, film, and an original coat of paint for the team. The game itself has a heavy emphasis on the series’ 70s library of music, the comedic timing of Star-Lord is present, and all the other core characters seem spot on.
Gameplay has players in the role of Star-Lord who commands fellow Guardians Gamora, Drax, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot in battle. Apparently, there was multiplayer planned for the title, but it was unfortunately cancelled. Story wise the game seems to take direct inspiration from the comic book lore. It features characters such as Queen Lady Hellbender just to name an example. In this version of the story Drax has seemingly been credited with killing Thanos. It should be noted that there’s also dialogue options that will have a direct effects on the game’s story. Much like the aforementioned Telltale game. We’ve only seen so much of the game, but it feels very on brand with what’s been presented currently. And as a rather new fan to the franchise this gets me pretty excited. Hopefully, Square knocks it out of the park with this one and adds itself to the list of reasons as to why more Guardians of the Galaxy content is viable.
