Type-Moon’s mobile game has received an animation adaptation from Aniplex. Gran & Vryn are placed into a battle they had nothing to do with until they met a blue-haired girl named Lyria who was held prisoner by the Erst Empire. Now Gran, Vryn, Lyria, and her bodyguard Katalina Alize fend of the Empire from using Lyria as a weapon.
Granblue Fantasy: The Animation is a 2017 anime adaption of the game of the same name, it is produced by A-1 Pictures and licensed by Aniplex of America. It is currently available on DVD & Blu-Ray in English.
Editor’s Note: This is a Blu-Ray version of our original review of Granblue Fantasy: The Animation for it’s home media release, our original review can be seen here. A review copy of Granblue Fantasy: The Animation Volume 1 was provided by Aniplex of America.
Granblue Fantasy: The Animation is based on the mobile game by Cygames and focuses on four main characters: Gran, Vryn, Lyria, and Katalina Alize. After meeting Lyria by chance Gran & Vryn learn that the Erst Empire has been using her due to her unique abilities to control the Primal Beasts. When Gran nearly dies saving her, Lyria gives him some of her power to fight the Empire.
THE GOOD: If you’re a fan of the game then you’ll be happy to know that the anime pretty much follows the direction of its source material. So it’ll be extremely easy to get into if you play the games and if this is your first time getting a taste of the Granblue Fantasy franchise then you may find interest in the games as well. Volume 1 covers the first seven episodes of the anime with Gran and co. protecting Lyria from the Erst Empire. The animation style provided by A-1 Pictures is a strange looking one, with very light colors used, but it mostly works.
THE BAD: There isn’t really too much wrong with Granblue Fantasy, but there are awkward moments when then animation can be a tad off putting. Usually during certain character movements and such.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: Granblue Fantasy is definitely one of the better mobile game anime adaptations out there. Following it’s source material makes it easy for fans of the franchise to get into and newcomers might want to give the mobile games a go after watching the thirteen episode run in total. Otaku Dome gives Granblue Fantasy: The Animation Vol. 1 Blu-Ray a 75 out of 100.
