Granblue Fantasy: The Animation is out now in it’s thirteen episode entirety for streaming. Based on the video game franchise of the same name, the anime follows Gran and his companion Vyrn as they come across Lyria a mysterious girl with the ability to connect with Primal Beast, and her guardian Katalina Alize, a former soldier of the Empire who held Lyria captive, until Katalina defected and rescued her. Now the four travel together to defeat the Empire and protect Lyria.
Granblue Fantasy: The Animation is a 2017 anime adaptation of the Granblue Fantasy video game franchise, it is produced by A-1 Pictures, and licensed by Aniplex of America. It is currently available for streaming in English.
Granblue Fantasy is a mobile video game franchise by Cygames and Mobage which have been viewed comparably to that of Square Enix’s Final Fantasy franchise. The anime adaptation sort of puts its own spin on things with the story and content, so it’s rather easy to get into even if you’re not familiar with the source material it comes from.
THE GOOD: Those unfamiliar with the game could find interest in the anime counterpart due to the minor game to anime differences that don’t really effect the story much. Voice acting performances are enjoyable, and I personally thought Vyrn’s VA stood out the most out of the main cast.
THE BAD: The animation at times can look a little awkward and choppy, though to be fair it could just be the unique style that A-1 Pictures chose to animate the series in.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: Granblue Fantasy on the surface may seem like your typical game to anime adaptation, but it’s a solid retelling that explains itself well enough for both fans and non-fans to enjoy. The VA performances are high class, some may struggle a bit getting used to the animation style however. Otaku Dome gives Granblue Fantasy: The Animation a 75 out of 100.
