Lionhead Studios unveiled Fable Legends for the Xbox One at Gamescom, and let loose a new way to play in Albion. Any adventurer in previous Fable games has been free to choose how their Hero interacts and is perceived in the world. Good deeds and choices are reflected in your Hero’s appearance with a glowing white halo or tattoos, while being “naughty” gave your Hero a look that could be pulled from any metal album cover circa 1994, demon horns and pale skin a-plenty. How you looked really didn’t effect the gameplay, citizens would cheer or jeer you on approach, but still offer up the same quests and rewards regardless of how many times you belch(or worse) in their face – in the end, you’re still a Hero.
Fable Legends will offer players a new direction, one of pure evil – the choice to start the game from the beginning as a Villain. No moral choices to discern your path while you play, just straight up “Hey, want to play a bad guy? Here you go.” – how exactly Villain gameplay works is unclear at this time. What we do know is that Villains are given control of an army of minions to set against the Heroes. You command your troops in real-time, and can manage their abilites – sounds similar to Commander Mode from the Battlefield franchise, or any RTS game.
New additions are headed for the Heroes, as well. Drop-in/Drop-Out Co-op is back, but this time you have a the option of mixing in AI controlled players to round out your experience. Players can choose to venture through Albion solo with AI companions, in Co-op with up to three friends, or with a created party comprised of both human and AI controlled allies.
Also, if you have a smartphone or tablet running Xbox SmartGlass, Heroes can use it to track game progress, learn more about quests, which is nice – but Villains will be able to use Xbox SmartGlass as a second screen for the Xbox One, you’ll be able to torment for siblings and friends while sitting next to them, hatching your strategy and unleashing your minions from your small screen for them to battle on the big one.
