Fruits Basket is a 2001 shojo anime series, it is produced by Studio Deen and licensed by Funimation, it is currently available on DVD and Blu-Ray.
Editor’s Note: Blu-Ray review copy of Fruits Baskets Complete Series was provided by Funimation.
Fruits Basket is an anime adaptation of the manga of the same name. The series acts as a reverse harem of sorts with the lead character being a young girl surrounded by men who are cursed by the twelve signs of the Zodiac and naturally because of this comedy ensues.
THE GOOD: Fruits Baskets adapts one of the first reverse harem manga series to reach a near mainstream status. Despite being an early entry into a sub genre of an already popular (and crowded) genre Fruits Basket is a hilarious yet dark take on the genre. While the manga is much darker than the anime adaptation, the anime isn’t exactly short on dark moments.
THE BAD: Unfortunately due to the manga still going while the anime was in production several story edits had to be made for time. Speaking of edits some changes outside of story were made exclusively for the including the exclusion of two key characters.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: Fruits Basket despite it’s issues is an enjoyable reverse harem and a great first pick for those interested in both the reverse and core harem genres. The comedy is on point and the story is rather emotional backed behind an entertaining lead character. Otaku Dome gives Fruits Basket a 75 out of 100.
