The popular swimming anime Free! returns for a second season entitled Eternal Summer. In this season after the success of the Swim Club’s creation, Haruka and his friends continue to support the club with a number of new changes including a new captain for Samezuka Academy, as well as a new member for Iwatobi.
Free!: Eternal Summer is the second season of the 2013 sports anime Free!, it is produced by Kyoto Animation and licensed by Funimation. It is currently available on DVD and Blu-Ray.
Free!: Eternal Summer continues where the first season of Free! left off. With the swim club being a success and Haruka and his friends now competing in swimming competitions with other schools in the surrounding areas. Haruka still can’t seem to find any excitement swimming competitively anymore, and takes note of rival Rin Matsuoka becoming the captain of his own swim team.
THE GOOD: Free!: Eternal Summer is an sports, slice of life anime that never takes itself seriously. Full of heart, comedy and charm, Free!: Eternal Summer continues to explore Haruka’s lack of thrill while swimming in competition, until his childhood friend Sousuke ends up transferring to his school.
THE BAD: While listed as a drama, Free! can often be too care free and relaxed, not that this is necessarily a bad thing, but there’s definitely more comedy than drama.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: Free!: Eternal Summer is a great light hearted, slice of life anime. Genuinely fun with some good comedy, Free! knows how not to take itself too seriously, but that can also be a problem for an anime series listed as a drama. Otaku Dome gives Free!: Eternal Summer an 80 out of 100.
