Christopher Null’s “Five Stars! How To Become A Film Critic, The World’s Greatest Job” gives a fantastic insight into both the the career of journalism, as well as the film industry. Null’s depth of knowledge released into this near 300 page book is something that any aspiring critic should read, if even for basic reference purposes.
Five Stars! How to Become a Film Critic, the World’s Greatest Job is a guide book written by Christopher Null, an updated version was released last year featuring new information and contacts.
For those unaware Christopher Null is a former editor for PC World and other publications, including his own website Film Critic. In Five Stars!, he uses his extensive knowledge to help guide aspiring film critics into the world of both journalism and film. Null guides us through both the web and print side of journalism above any other form. But, due to how prominent these two are compared to others in today’s world, it’s understandable why he chose to go into details over these two forms of journalism in particular.
THE GOOD: Null being the experienced critic that he is, gives us so much information that it’s surprising that the book is only 260 pages in length. He goes into deep details including on how to do some prerequisite work such as registering a domain and finding a hosting service should you want to go out and open an online publication on your own. These little, but important first steps help shape Five Stars! into an excellent guide book, not just in it’s genre, but overall.
I enjoyed Null explaining some things that wouldn’t normally be discussed, such as a certain production company hating press. This kind of information while not traditional, still felt necessary for those who are starting out of the gate. Null’s book also includes some information on public relations as well as giving out some contact info from a rather large list of studios.
THE BAD: Nothing.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: Five Stars! is an informative guide book into journalism and the world of film. The details presented by Christopher Null is so extensive that it’s hard to put down at times, and even critics with a few years under their belt can benefit from Null’s knowledge. Anyone looking to get into journalism as a critic, should definitely check out Five Stars! Otaku Gives Five Stars! How to Become a Film Critic, The World’s Greatest Job, an 95 out of 100.
