In 2022, video game publisher Electronic Arts revealed that it had entered a working relationship with now Disney-owned superhero empire Marvel Entertainment to begin developing video games based on its roster of established IP. The first in this new era of EA/Marvel titles would be revealed to be a single-player Iron Man title, developed by Motive Studio, which is best known for titles such as the 2023 Dead Space remake and Star Wars: Squadron & Battlefront II (2017). Sometime after this announcement, a rumor began circulating last July that EA had already acquired the license to its next Marvel game in the form of a single-player Black Panther game. EA themselves has since confirmed this rumor.
Alongside the announcement came the opening of a brand-new studio called Cliffhanger Games. The studio notably has a roster of developers formerly of Monolith fame known for the Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor franchise and their upcoming superhero title in Wonder Woman, which recently began development. EA states that the Black Panther title will be third-person and focuses on an “expansive and reactive world.” There may be at least one more Marvel-themed title to come from appears to be a trial-run collaboration between the two.
