The epic finale to the even more epic Dragon Ball Z has finally come to Blu-Ray with the re-release of Season 9. The Z Fighters face off against the evil Majin Buu for the final time, the only problem is Earth has been destroyed, and the final battle must take in the world of the Kai.
Dragon Ball Z is an 1998 Shounen anime series, it is produced by Toei Animation. It is licensed by Funimation, and is available on DVD, Blu-Ray, and streaming services.
This is the end for the Z Fighters, Buu has reached the breaking point and thus transformed into his most powerful form. Earth and all those on it have been destroyed, and Goku, Vegeta, and the Kais try to go for a last stand against the genocidal maniac.
THE GOOD: Season 9 is the darkest DBZ has been since the Frieza saga where death and blood was practically in every other episode. The OST used for season 9 is absolutely amazing even a decade or so later, and remains one of the best anime OSTs ever created. The comedy is scaled don from the earlier episodes significantly, and heavy action is put in its place.
THE BAD: There isn’t much wrong with season 9, but like previous seasons it felt like it dragged on a bit with a lot of filler episodes. Kai has eliminated a lot of this, but this is the re-release of the original version of the series with the unnecessary filler content in tact.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: Season 9 features one of the overall best OSTs in DBZ history as well as in anime history. The lack of comedy and heavy emphasis on action and drama made for a great 40 or so episodes. However, it still suffered from the long criticized dragged pacing issue, but with its limited problems, the big finale pai off in a huge way and gave long time Dragon Ball fans a satisfying close. Otaku Dome gives Dragon Ball Z Season 9 on Blu-Ray an 92 out of 100.
