Rick Famuyiwa’s coming of age film Dope will go down in history as this generation’s Friday or Boys in the Hood. Full of hilarity, drama, and emotion, Dope with it’s energetic soundtrack and extremely likable cast will be on a number of 2015 must watch films lists once the year comes to a close, and then some.
Dope is an 2015 coming of age film, it is written and directed by Rick Famuyiwa. It is produced by Open Road Films, and distributed by Universal Pictures. It is currently available on Digital HD, and hits DVD & Blu-Ray this Tuesday.
If you’re a fan of urban films such as cult classics, Friday, Boys in the Hood, Menace II Society, etc, then Dope should definitely be on your watch list. Not due to the fact that the film contains some similar themes as the previously mentioned, but due to the fact that it provides genuine entertainment. With a fun, lovable cast, great script, and enjoyable soundtrack. Dope is going to be a movie that will be discussed in general conversation with other urban films 10 years from now.
THE GOOD: Dope is an smart, funny, and genuinely enjoyable film. Everything from the writing, to the acting, to the soundtrack is brilliant. While a lot of the themes used in the movie have been done to death in urban films, Dope still manages to differentiate itself from those other films to give itself an original fresh look and feel of the genre. Shameik Moore’s performance is one of the most enjoyable aspects of Dope, and the remaining cast were just likable and fun to see; including rapper A$AP Rocky, and Workaholic’s Blake Anderson who plays an internet hacker and deep web connection for Malcolm and his friends.
THE BAD: While there’s not much wrong with Dope, if anything, I will add that the pacing was a tad fast.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: Dope will go down in history as a classic film in not only the urban sub-genre, but all of cinema. A fun film with a likable cast, and an even more lovable soundtrack, Dope will be remembered for years to come and viewed as a cult classic film. Otaku Dome gives Dope an 100 out of 100.
