The Death Parade anime has made its way to homes in the US on Blu-Ray & DVD. Based on and taking place some time after the anime short Death Billiards, the anime series focuses on new character Chiyuki, a woman who’s lost her memories and now aides Decim as an assistant at Quindecim.
Death Parade is an 2015 seinen anime series, it is produced by Madhouse and licensed by Funimation. It is currently available on DVD & Blu-Ray in English.
Taking place after Death Billiards, Death Parade follows a similar plot of the anime short, but instead has a new female lead acting as the main character alongside Decim. In Death Parade lost souls play deadly games that reveal secrets of the two chosen peoples lives to determine who’s worthy of Heaven, or who should be damned eternally in Hell.
THE GOOD: While focus is undoubtedly on main characters Decim and Chiyuki, minor and side characters receive a fairly decent amount of screen time and back story. The heart of the series is exploring the morals of the human characters being sentence to Heaven or Hell, which at times have some rather surprising results.
THE BAD: The episode count is really short, which is unfortunate as the series really picks up stem in the latter half.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: While short, Death Parade still manages to get the job done with a well written story, excellently written characters, and a satisfying finish. I personally felt the series could have gotten a few more episodes without feeling dragged though. Otaku Dome gives Death Parade Complete Series Blu-Ray an 87 out of 100.
