DC & WB’s long-awaited digital streaming service is finally out of beta and available to the general public. Though it unfortunately will be a bit of a longer wait before we can see some original TV content, the streaming service does still offer an impressive list of content and perks which can be viewed now, including the recently released “The Death of Superman” remake from earlier this year.

DC Universe is a 2018 DC Comics themed streaming service it is produced by DC Entertainment and WB Pictures Television. It is currently available on web, tablet, iOS, Android, Roku, Apple, and Amazon devices.

Editor’s Note: Devices used for review: iOS (iPhone), Android, and web.

Your DC Universe is here.

After it’s initial announcement in April of last year, DC stunned with the unveiling of it’s own streaming service price at $7.99 a month and $74.99 a year. The first of original content announced was revealed to be the live-action Teen Titans series “Titans” originally slated for TNT around 2014-2016, and a third season renewal for fan favorite animated series Young Justice: Outsiders, which originally aired on WB’s Cartoon Network. While the former would unfortunately receive slight delays from launch, the service would provide viewers with a mix of classic, modern, and recent titles from TV, film, and even comics as well as a forum for the community and shop which will include exclusive items.

Celebrate Batman Day with DC Universe right now.

THE GOOD: Taking full advantage of the premise of it’s day of release, one of the first things you’ll see upon scrolling about on the DC Universe home page is a healthy dose of advertised Batman content. I mean, it is Batman Day but it’s good to see DC getting in on the fun with ‘Universe’ regardless. From The Dark Knight Returns to Batman Beyond, and yes of course Batman: The Animated Series (airing exclusively on Universe in HD) a large array of Batman themed stories throughout it’s three provided categories can be seen on the home. Thankfully, DC were careful to remember that not everyone is a Batman fan, so the only content unlocked currently isn’t just Batman related. There’s Static Shock, the first two seasons of Young Justice, The Adventures of Superman, Wonder Woman, and even the earlier mentioned The Death of Superman (2018), which was rather surprising to see considering how fresh it still is.

The DC Universe community board.

Outside of the content the forum and shop both of which are now live, provide you with a way to interactive with other members of the service as well purchase some exclusive and non-exclusive merch such as figures and tees. The forum already has a decent amount of activity on it to have not been up very long, but some of it carried over from the beta launch a few days ago. The video player is smooth and works pretty flawlessly regardless of which device you’re using and whether or not you’re watching a film or TV episode. As of right now there’s no option to change the quality setting at will, but I’m hoping this will change over time. There’s also a news section for updates on what’s to come, blog posts, etc. While I didn’t really spend much time there, the encyclopedia is an awesome “catch up” of sorts that helps newcomers get to know the heroes of DC. With info on their origins, powers, key storylines, teams, and even media appearances. Eventually there will opportunity for fans to add their own knowledge to these pages. The comic reader is a lot like any other web-based model with zoom in and zoom out features and such, however DC Universe’s was designed specifically with TV use in mind so there’s that if interested.

Buy some exclusive DC Universe merch why don’t ya?

THE BAD: At this point really the only thing bad that I can say about DC Universe is the obvious lack of originals, the first of which (Titans) being set to release this October, followed by Young Justice: Outsiders in January. The lack of a quality option for the video player is also a bit of a downer, but I have no doubts that it’s own the way.

Located in the News section, DC Daily will provide you with weekly updates on DC Universe.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: As it currently stands, DC Universe still feels like it’s worth what it’s priced at. There are times when it’ll feel like your usual streaming service and there are a lot of times that feel like it stands out. For some missing features, I’m willing to give them the “early launch” benefit and expecting the major improvements to roll out over time such as a quality change button and original content being addressed. Otaku Dome gives DC Universe a 95 out of 100.
