Warning: Full to near complete spoilers for the episodes “Repilot” and “Introduction to Teaching” will be featured below in our review, if you have yet to see the Community Season 5 one hour premiere, then avoid this review until doing so. You have been warned. Now then on to our review:

I haven’t watched Community very long, inf act I’ve only been watching the series for about 3 or 4 months now since it went on break from season 4. My Community viewing was mostly thanks in part to Comedy Central ordering the series for syndication, and after only watching a handful of episodes on the network I fell in love with it. The writing, comedy, and quirky/unique cast of characters made for some great TV experiences. Abed and Troy’s crazy antics alone made the show feel like something special. The TV loving, nerdy duo brought a lot of memorable moments to the series, though it wasn’t really present in the pilot other than Troy & Abed’s shot at Zach Braff that was also a subtle yet friendly shot at Danny Glover, which was pretty funny “Son of a bitch, after everything Scrubs did for him!”.

THE GOOD:  Repilot did exactly what it set out to do, reboot Community so newcomers could come to give it a try. Although I got a bit of a head start on the series compared to most newcomers, I definitely felt like I was watching a re-written pilot script come to life. The surprise return of Chevy Chase, as a hologram, no less was fun to watch, as was Breaking Bad’s Jonathan Banks cameo in a role that was similar in vein to his role in the aforementioned series. It looks as if Banks may have a more regular role for the remainder of the season judging by the way “introduction to Teaching” concluded with Jeffry and Banks’ joining the study group.

As mentioned above, I haven’t watched Community very long, so I have no idea where this lawsuit storyline is going. I did enjoy the characters making a total 180 on their feelings of Greendale from earlier seasons when they seemed happy during their original time there, but then felt it was soul crushing escape from their lives. Jeffry returning to Greendale as a teacher was a nice way t0 keep him into the series after he graduated. Kevin explaining his happenings while the group left Greendale also brought some fairly good laughs.

THE BAD: If I had to make one complaint about this episode, it would have to be the lack of Abed & Troy being Abed & Troy, but this hour premiere was all about Jeffry, so the lack of focus on the other characters is understandable.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: While Community made a fantastic return in reboot mode, it had a little too much focus on Jeffry, though this is understandable due to this season mainly revolving around him and the Greendale lawsuit. There were plenty of laughs from the characters that had some focus including the aforementioned Jeffry, but hopefully there won’t be too many “all Jeffry, all the time” episodes. Otaku Dome gives Community “Repilot” & “Introduction to Teaching” am 84 out of 100.
