Cobra the Space Pirate and his Psychogun returns in a brand new series set. Complete with 13 episodes and two OVAs, this new series has Cobra protecting an important key while coming into contact with the mysterious woman Secret as they work together to protect the Key of Shiva.
Cobra: The Animation is an 2009 shounen anime series, it is produced by Magic Bus and licensed by Sentai Filmworks, it is currently available on Blu-Ray.
Originally published in 1978 by Shueisha, Cobra became so popular that it sold over 40 million copies from Weekly Shounen Jump, becoming the magazine’s best selling series. Since then the series has spawned two anime an original 31 episode series from the 80s and the modern 2000s series.
THE GOOD: Cobra the Animation has some very solid art throughout the set of it’s run. Voice acting and the characters themselves give you a reason to stay invested with the series. Cobra has a familiar James Bond like flair which will definitely appeal to some. All in all I believe this series is far better than the original in the 80s in every single way possible.
THE BAD: Unfortunately the series is far too short which is problematic from a viewer experience as it leaves you wanting more and more.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: Cobra the animation is superior to its 80s counterpart in every way. Greater writing, voice acting, and character development makes it hard to not enjoy the series. Cobra’s James Bond like character design will definitely be able to appeal to viewers quite quickly, it’s just unfortunate that the episode count is far too low for a quality series. Otaku Dome gives Cobra the Animation an 78 out of 100.
