The long-rumored Castlevania animated series adaptation by fan-favorite director Adi Shankar has released its first handful of episodes on Netflix. Produced by Frederator Studios (known for Fairly Oddparents, Adventure Time, and others), the series acts as an animated adaptation that uses Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse by Konami as its source material. Viewers will be surprised to find that the series is actually rather faithful to the game it adapts its story from.
Castlevania is a 2017 animated action series, it is an adaptation of Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse, it is produced by Frederator Studios, and Powerhouse Animation, it is available exclusively on Netflix.
Castlevania is a video game series that holds fond memories for many gamers, rather it be the classic SNES original entry, or the more recent incarnations such as the Lord of Shadows franchise, chances are gamers will have at least one memorable Castlevania entry on their list of favorite games. Adi Shankar, who is quickly becoming an iconic director of fan-favorite properties is looking to give fans more memories from the beloved franchise, this time with a new TV adaptation based on the third core game, and it’s as R-rated as you’d expect a Castlevania adaptation to be.
THE GOOD: Castlevania, despite it’s short ride is a hell of one, with a stellar ensemble cast, fantastic voice performances, incredible animation (especially for action sequences), and a superb script the first season of holds a lot of promise towards the finish come next year. After such a long attachment to family-friendly networks such as Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network, one would be surprised to find famed studio Frederator attached to this project. Speaking again of the casting, Richard Armitage in particular nailed it as lead Trevor Belmont, especially during his character’s initial drunken introduction. The story is rather fast paced, however it doesn’t stop both fans and non-fans alike from getting a grasp of what it’s trying to get at.
THE BAD: Limited episode run is over before you know it and it has you begging for more.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: Castlevania only has four episodes right now, and it’s a damn shame, but the episodes are a thrill from beginning to end. Adi Shankar’s talents as both a creator, and fan of creations mold together perfectly and does a fantastic job of taking care of this beloved franchise and its characters. Otaku Dome gives Castlevania Season One a 96 out of 100.
