Boruto: Naruto the Movie hits theaters in America & Canada beginning on the 10th of October, however I was able to see the movie in advanced, and if you’ve seen the previous canon film; The Last: Naruto the Movie, then you’re in for a treat. While the latter was heavily focused on story and plot (more so Naruto & Hinita’s budding relationship), the former was focused on Boruto, Naruto & Hinita’s son and was far more action oriented in comparison to it’s predecessor. This film, which could very well be the final one, focused on Boruto and his struggling relationship with his father Naruto, as well as his position as the 7th Hokage.
Boruto: Naruto the Movie is an 2015 Shonen anime film, it is produced by Studio Pierrot, and licensed by Viz Media. It will soon be in theaters across America & Canada beginning on 10/10/15.
Having watched Naruto since the dub made it’s way to America back in the early 2000s, I must admit it’s a bit sad seeing it potentially end after 10+ years. However, if Boruto is the way Masashi Kishimoto opts to give the series it’s final bow, then he did a hell of a job with it. While the film was admittedly fast paced to be almost 2 hours long, the action, story, and strong focus on Naruto, Boruto, their family, and a ton of secondary characters brings the film together in a neatly tucked package.
THE GOOD: Boruto is only an hour and 45 minutes long, but there’s so much happening within every 5-10 minutes that if you get distracted you could wind up missing something important. The heavy focus on action was much appreciated, while the lack of action in The Last wasn’t a complaint, it did feel a tad nonexistent until the final act of the film. The updated animation for the Boruto fight sequences was very awesome to look at, and felt reminiscent of the anime. There was also a good amount of focus on quite few characters, it felt like every key character involved got a decent amount of screen time.
THE BAD: The pacing was a bit fast, you could easily miss a key scene within the next 5-10 minutes if you’re not focused on the film 100%.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: Speculation has already begun that the end of the Naruto New Era Project will lead to a part 3 of the anime and manga, starring Boruto, but if that’s not the case, then Boruto ending the franchise is ok. The film while speedily paced, featured a ton of action, excellent character focus, and provided a story that could both end and continue the franchise of Naruto in some fashion or another. Otaku Dome gives Boruto: Naruto the Movie an 89 out of 100.
