Blood-C is the 2011 re-imaging of the original series Blood+ and what a re-imagining it is. At twelve episodes and a film finale, Blood-C is far more gory and violent than its 2005 predecessor, often times to the point where it feels unnecessary and unwarranted, and this is coming from a horror fan.

Blood-C is an 2011 reboot of the 2007 seinen anime series Blood+, it is produced by Production I.G, and licensed by Funimation. It is currently available on DVD and Blu-Ray in English.

After a viewing of Blood-C I can’t help but think that most viewers will be nothing short but a bit confused. To be very honest, I found myself a tad confused about Blood-C’s concept as well. I’m not sure if it’s supposed to be an re-imagining of the original Blood+ or if it was meant to act as a reboot of the franchise. And there’s also the whole super gore thing, while seinen isn’t new to gory violence, this one seemed to like it a little too much compared to its more tame (but still gory) predecessor.

Editor’s Note: Both the series and the film finale “The Last” will be featured in this review.

Blood-C while gory, does have a lighter side shown throughout its run.

THE GOOD: After seeing both the full series as well as the film finale, I can say that Blood-C is at least giving those curious a good story that completes itself. It’s also very nice to see seinen anime having some light tone here and there, which is a bit of a rarity. The action is fine and if you’re a gore fan, then there’s literally dozens of gory scenes throughout, even more than Blood+ which had an extremely heartbreaking scene involving a human character in particular (I’m sure you know which I’m speaking of).

Dorky or not, Saya is still a badass.

THE BAD: The gore felt necessarily dark for most of its gory scenery.

A fair effort at bringing back Blood.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: Blood-C while valiant in its effort ultimately could have used a tad more of that effort into its development. The super gore didn’t really help matters and kind of felt like I.G. was using it as a selling point. However, the story is concluded well enough to deserve at least a complete viewing of the series and film once or twice. Otaku Dome gives Blood-C The Complete Series Blu-Ray an 68 out of 100.
