Black Butler’s third season final comes to the US in a new DVD/Blu-Ray set. Covering the Noah’s Ark Circus arc of the Square Enix manga (yes you read that correctly), season three of Black Butler provides some good comedy, solid action scenes. and another great dub cast.
Black Butler is an 2008 shounen anime series, it is produced by A-1 Pictures, and licensed by Funimation. It is currently available on DVD and Blu-Ray in English.
Having heard of Black Butler through the grapevine, I always considering giving it a watch, but never got around to seeing any of the previous seasons. Thankfully Book of Circus explains the opening events of the anime & manga well enough to where you can just start from Book of Circus and check out the other seasons later. Each season of Black Butler (and even the OVAs and film) covers a canon arc from the manga, so luckily it’s one of the few anime adaptations to exclude the use of filler.
THE GOOD: Black Butler is a fast paced, but nice series. There’s some mature themes, but it knows how to keep things fairly light. The dub cast is pretty good, the British accents sounded authentic enough and wasn’t an annoyance. The animation feels like the standard work from A-1 Pictures, which is great. I also had a good time listening to the Victorian OST featured in the series.
THE BAD: Only a mere ten episodes long.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: Black Butler: Book of Circus is fairly short for any anime entering it’s third season, but the pay off works to the point where the episode count could be gotten away with. Adapting the Noah’s Arc Circus arc to satisfying results, Black Butler: Book of Circus further improves the Black Butler anime franchise. Otaku Dome gives Black Butler: Book of Circus an 80 out of 100.
