After receiving a rather lukewarm reception in theaters, Batman vs Superman comes home in a new R rated “Ultimate Edition”. As Batman and Superman brawl, more cohesive story telling is added to give a bit of depth to the new characters introduced, including Affleck’s Batman/Bruce Wayne.
Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice is an 2016 superhero, action film, it is produced by DC Entertainment and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.
Let’s get this little rant (I guess?) out of the way. First of all, Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice isn’t a flat out horrible film, there’s a lot of fun moments in fact. However, the original version of the movie is so confusing with certain characters, you’d have to be a complete DC nut to understand the film you’re seeing. Thankfully, the Ultimate Edition actually does help construct thing a lot better than the original theatrical release.
THE GOOD: As previously pointed out, Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice has some fun moments. The action is great, Ben Affleck as Batman is amazingly well performed, and the OST is enjoyable as hell to listen to for a superhero film. Wonder Woman even manages to feel important despite a rather late introduction.
THE BAD: It’s incohesive for non-comic book/DC fans, and then some. While the three lead characters get some good screen time, including Wonder Woman, the others felt a little “just because”, and it often feels like the film is trying to do a little too much, in too little time.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: Batman vs Super: Dawn of Justice is a solid film that could have been great a little more time and effort put into it. The Ultimate Edition really helps differentiate a more true vision to the theatrical release so for only about 30 minutes of extra footage, that’s a hell of an edit job done. Otaku Dome gives Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice Ultimate Edition an 77 out of 100.
