After decades of asking the question “what if Bruce Wayne/Batman got married?” DC Comics finally gives us an idea of what a Dark Knight wedding just might look like and it’s with his on again, off again love interest Selina Kyle/Catwoman. This issue while giving us a fun idea of a Bat & Cat wedding is more so a tribute to the decades long relationship between the two DC icons than an actual ceremony.
THE GOOD: The idea of Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle getting married after a long string of lovers between the two of them is something DC fans have imagined for decades. The storyline was first officially teased back in Batman Rebirth #32 when the Dark Knight finally popped the question to Catwoman at the end of the issue. Since then DC readers anticipated the arc coming to fruition, which would take an unfortunate follow-up eighteen issues to become a reality, but we’re here. In Batman #50 we have Batman & Catwoman opening the issue taking on Kite Man, while exchanging a hilarious bit of dialogue on witnesses and finding a judge. After easily disposing of Kite Man, they pick their witnesses and prepare for the wedding; Bruce chooses Alfred, Selina chooses longtime ally and friend Holly Robinson.
In between the issue we get some cool shots of Batman & Catwoman throughout the storied history of DC Comics presented in different eras created by multiple DC artist and writers. They almost act like a series of variant covers being show, but there’s dialogue presenting an overview of Batman and Catwoman’s feelings for each other. The end of the story sees Holly with Bane and his band of villains gloating over successfully “breaking the Bat”, which is likely to lead to a big showdown in the future. By “breaking the Bat” Bane was of course referring to using Holly to manipulate Catwoman into making her ultimate decision on the wedding at the issue’s end.
THE BAD: The wedding unfortunately doesn’t occur. Bruce and Selina greet each other before the ceremony begins on the rooftop they initially met on, but Selina suddenly runs off, while Bruce does the same. This is naturally due to interference on behave of Holly who was manipulating things from behind the scenes for Bane and co. I appreciate what Tom King was doing with this storyline, he was doing the long con and it worked beautifully, but for those who actually were hoping that Bruce and Selina got married this is a bit of a screw job.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: If you can look past the lack of a real wedding, Batman #50 is a great tribute arc to Batman & Catwoman that leads to something much, much bigger. With the set up to Bane being the DC Rebirth big bad things are going to get more interesting from here as the months go on for The Dark Knight. Otaku Dome gives Batman #50 “The Wedding” a 90 out of 100.
