Dwayne Johnson makes his HBO debut as the lead in the new football drama Ballers. Playing a former NFL star turned Sports agent, Johnson stars as Spencer Strasmore, a man struggling with his own demons while trying to guide young up and coming NFL talent with personal issues that could damage their images and their careers.
Ballers is an 2015 drama series, it is produced by Closest to the Hole Productions, it currently airs on HBO.
As someone who’s not particularly a fan of most (if not all) Sports, I can say that one good thing about Ballers is the fact that the show actually makes you care about football throughout your viewing. The acting and writing are very solid, and Ballers gives you a newfound appreciation for the sport it focuses on.
THE GOOD: Ballers is a damn good drama series and whether you enjoy football or not you’ll most certainly gain a new found respect for the sport as you learn some of the inner workings of the industry. Such as how contracts are written up and the like. Johnson and Corddry shine in the lead roles as Sport super agents, the writing and acting from the remaining cast are both very solid to keep you glued for a complete season viewing.
THE BAD: Some of the b plots kind of fall flat and go nowhere.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: While some of the b plots aren’t as good as they could be, Ballers first season is written well enough to entertain NFL, sports, and drama fans all at once. Performances of the cast are great, even some of the not so known actors perform well. The A plots are one the show’s strongest elements and shapes the overall presentation beautifully. Otaku Dome gives Ballers Season One Blu-Ray an 82 out of 100.
