Attack on Titan has become a monster of an manga franchise in such a short period of time. Since it’s release in 2009, Attack on Titan has sold millions of copies of its manga, spawned anime and anime spinoff series, novels, video games, and now two live-action films.
Attack on Titan Part 1 is an 2015 Live-Action shounen ilm adaptation of the manga series of the same name, it is produced and distributed by Toho Pictures, and licensed by Funimation Films. Part 1 is currently available in the USA on DVD and Blu-Ray.
After it’s initial reveal in 2011 fans of the franchise from around the world rejoiced at the news. Then in 2014 a teaser trailer/car commercial (yeah really) was released in Japan showing off the sheer beauty of the Titans in Live-Action for the first time. Though the live-action adaptation has some serious flaws.
THE GOOD: Attack on Titan Part 1 for what it is, is an ok live-action foray into the manga/anime franchise. Most of the key characters from the source material are present including series leads Eren, Armin, and Mikasa. The Titans are perhaps the biggest plus of the movie, some of the tokusatsu effects used within the movie are excellent on screen.
THE BAD: For some odd reason the film producers decided to change much of the source material. For example, Attack on Titan is set in Germany, whereas the film changes the setting to Japan, and because of this new characters were used, leaving many unused or outright avoided. Fan favorite Levi was an unfortunate victim of this revision due to his ethnicity. They tried to replace Levi with an original character, it was a valiant effort, but alas there is only one.
OVERALL THOUGHT: Part 1 of the Attack on Titan Live-Action film really tries to make the best out of a bad situation, but with such heavy editing to the source material and the flat out removal of key characters to the canon there wasn’t much that could be done to rectify the changes made. There are still some enjoyable moments present, and you have to appreciate the design of the Titans in Live-Action. Otaku Dome gives Attack on Titan Part 1 Blu-Ray an 70 out of 100.
