Assassination Classroom returns in a brand new live-action film. Covering the first half of the anime and manga of the same name, a group of students are tasked with killing a powerful alien being with blazing speed within a certain time limit. If the students fail to kill the alien before the allotted time frame, he will destroy planet Earth in response. In addition to this news, the alien creature going by Koro-sensei has taken it upon himself to train the students for his defeat.
Assassination Classroom is a 2015 live-action adaptation of the anime/manga of the same name, it is produced by Juichi Uehara and licensed by Funimation. It is currently available in English subs.
Editor’s Note: A Blu-Ray review copy of Assassination Classroom live-action was provided by Funimation in support of this review.
Containing both parts of the live-action adaptation, Assassination Classroom live-action’s Blu-Ray set features one of the most solid live-action anime/manga adaptations of the more recent crop. From Attack on Titan to Bleach to Tokyo Ghoul, live-action anime films are becoming a thing for better or worse and for the most part it’s been for the better, at least in my own opinion. Assassination Classroom continues the decent handful of adaptations we’ve received within the last couple of years with a near 100% faithful adaptation of the beloved comedy series.
THE GOOD: With the films released so close together during their initial releases in home country Japan, it was smart for Funimation to bundle them both together instead of separating them. I can’t imagine the subbing took that much time to finish between the two. If you’ve read the manga or watched the anime, then you know the story of Assassination’s Classroom, so there’s not much to bring up that most reading this won’t already be aware of. However, I will say that the live-action films are extremely faithful to their source material and nearly every scene and panel are adapted beautifully here in live-action. And in a weird way, the live-action adaptation sort of has it’s own spirit in addition to it’s source.
THE BAD: Koro-sensei’s 3D animation looks kind of bad in certain scenes. As expected with any live-action adaptation, not everything can be translated to the big screen completely, so go into your initial viewing experience realizing this and you’ll still have a damn good time.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: Outside of some spotty 3D animation for Koro-sensei and some scenes not making the final cut of the film, there’s honestly not a lot to hate about Assassination Classroom live-action. The comedy, action. and acting all hit their marks and it represents it’s source material effortlessly compared to most adaptations. Regardless of which side of the fandom you come from be it the anime or manga, you’ll enjoy yourself watching Assassination Classroom live-action Parts 1 & 2. Otaku Dome gives Assassination Classroom Live-Action a combined score of 87 out of 100.
